Cake Budget
An Honest Comparison

Cake Budget vs YNAB

Same envelope philosophy. Opposite maintenance model. YNAB teaches you a method and asks you to run it. Cake runs the method for you and asks you to glance at it.

The Two-Week Test

Don't compare budgeting apps by their feature lists. Compare them by what happens when life gets loud and you stop opening the app for two weeks. Every budgeter lapses. Especially those of us with ADHD. The question is what's waiting when you come back.

Coming back to YNAB

A queue of unapproved transactions. Category balances frozen at the moment you left. A payday (or two) of dollars that were never assigned. YNAB's own community calls it the catch-up session, and it's the moment many people quit. The method is sound; it just assumes you kept showing up.

Coming back to Cake

A short note: while you were away, your paycheck was set aside into your slices and your transactions were sorted for you. Maybe a few need a home, one tap away. The budget stayed current because it never needed you to run it.

Where YNAB Is Genuinely Better

An honest comparison cuts both ways. If these matter most to you, YNAB is a fine choice.

Method education

YNAB's workshops, videos, and community are the best budgeting education anywhere. If you want to learn a philosophy deeply, they teach it well.

Community

A large, devoted community of budgeters sharing templates and encouragement. Cake's community is younger and smaller.

The Same Envelopes, Running Themselves

Slices are envelopes. Funding schedules are payday assignments. Rules are transaction approval. Everything YNAB asks you to do by hand has a self-running counterpart here.

Common Questions

Isn't Cake just YNAB with extra automation?

We share the envelope philosophy: money gets assigned to purposes before you spend it. The difference is who maintains the system. In YNAB, you assign every dollar each payday and approve every transaction; the method works as long as you keep showing up. In Cake, your paycheck is detected automatically, your slices fund themselves, and rules sort transactions as they arrive. The budget keeps working when you don't show up.

What happens in each app if I disappear for two weeks?

In YNAB, imported transactions pile up unapproved and category balances go stale until you sit down for a catch-up session. In Cake, paychecks keep funding your slices and rules keep sorting transactions; when you come back you get a short summary of what happened and, at most, a few transactions that need a home. This is the single biggest practical difference between the two apps.

I'm coming from YNAB. Will the concepts transfer?

Directly. YNAB categories map to Cake slices, "give every dollar a job" maps to funding your slices, and "roll with the punches" maps to moving funds between slices. What you can leave behind: manually assigning dollars every payday and approving each transaction.

Does Cake have YNAB's goal targets?

Yes. Slices have targets and due dates, with on-track projections based on your actual funding schedule. Bill slices fill toward due dates, savings slices toward goals, and the app tells you whether each is on track without any math on your part.

Why is Cake cheaper?

Starter is $5/month ($50/year) because a solo, neurodivergent-founder-run product has different economics than a venture-backed company. Budget Pro at $10 and Family at $20 add more bank connections and shared budgeting. Every plan includes the automation.
